A Retired Person Visa allows foreign nationals who are financially self-sufficient and wish to retire in South Africa to reside in the country long-term. Applicants must demonstrate a stable source of income, such as a pension or retirement fund, and provide proof of sufficient funds to support themselves without relying on employment. The visa is typically issued for up to four years and may be renewed, allowing retirees to enjoy life in South Africa while complying with immigration laws. This visa does not permit employment within the country.

  • The visa is generally issued for a period of up to four years, depending on the applicant’s financial standing and supporting documentation. It may be renewed while the retiree continues to meet the eligibility requirements.

Applicants must be 55 years or older.

Proof of sufficient funds to support themselves (typically a minimum of R37,000 per month or equivalent in foreign currency) is required.

Applicants must have health insurance covering the duration of their stay.

The visa holder may not engage in employment while in South Africa.

Applicants must provide a criminal record clearance from their country of origin or residence.

Holders may not work or engage in business activities.

The visa is tied to financial self-sufficiency; failure to maintain funds may result in cancellation.

The visa cannot be used to apply for permanent residence unless specific requirements under the Immigration Act are met.

The visa remains valid for the period granted, typically four years, and can be renewed provided all conditions continue to be met.

Renewal applications require updated proof of financial means, health insurance, and continued compliance with visa conditions.

Retirees must depart South Africa if the visa expires and cannot be renewed.
