CRITICAL SKILLS VISA

critical skills

Critical Skills Visa is designed for highly qualified foreign nationals who possess skills and expertise deemed essential to South Africa’s economic growth and development. Applicants must have qualifications and experience listed on the Critical Skills List published by the Department of Home Affairs. This visa allows professionals to live and work in South Africa without requiring a prior job offer, although securing employment within 12 months is necessary. It is typically valid for up to five years and may lead to permanent residence after a continuous stay, provided all requirements are met.

The Critical Skills Visa is designed for foreign nationals who possess qualifications, skills, or experience that are listed on South Africa’s Critical Skills List.
It enables skilled professionals to live and work legally in South Africa in occupations where local expertise is in short supply.

This visa supports the development of South Africa’s economy by attracting talent in fields such as engineering, medicine, ICT, finance, and academia.

The Critical Skills Visa is typically issued for a period of up to five years, depending on the applicant’s qualifications, employment offer, or professional registration.
If the applicant does not yet have a job offer, a 12-month visa may be granted to allow them to secure suitable employment.

Applicants must demonstrate that their occupation appears on the official Critical Skills List published by the Department of Home Affairs.

Qualifications must be evaluated and verified by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

Proof of registration with a relevant professional body or council in South Africa is required where applicable.

If employed, the visa holder must work only in the occupation for which the visa was issued.

If unemployed upon arrival, the holder must secure employment within 12 months to remain compliant.

The visa holder may not work in a field outside the designated critical skill without applying for a new visa.

The visa cannot be used to engage in unrelated business or self-employment activities.

Failure to secure employment within the initial 12-month period (if applicable) may result in the visa expiring without renewal.

The visa remains valid for the duration granted, generally up to five years, provided the holder continues to work in the approved occupation.

Renewal applications must include updated proof of employment, registration with the professional body, and compliance with visa conditions.

After five years of continuous residence on a Critical Skills Visa, the holder may qualify for permanent residence under Section 26(a) of the Immigration Act.
