An Academic Sabbatical Visa allows foreign academics or researchers to temporarily stay in South Africa to conduct research, teaching, or academic projects at recognised institutions. It is designed for individuals taking a short-term leave from their home institutions to collaborate with South African universities or research bodies. Applicants must provide proof of academic affiliation, purpose of stay, and financial means to support themselves. The visa is typically valid for the duration of the sabbatical or research project, usually up to 12 months, and may be extended in certain circumstances with approval from the Department of Home Affairs.

The Academic Sabbatical Visa allows foreign academics, professors, or researchers to spend a temporary period in South Africa for:

Conducting research at a recognised South African institution

Participating in teaching or lecturing assignments

Collaborating on academic projects or exchange programs

This visa promotes academic exchange and knowledge sharing between South Africa and other countries.

The visa is generally issued for the duration of the sabbatical, typically up to 12 months.

Extensions may be granted if the academic program or research project continues beyond the initial period.

  • Applicants must provide a letter of invitation or confirmation from a recognised South African institution specifying the purpose and duration of the sabbatical.Proof of sufficient funds to cover living and travel expenses is required.

Applicants must hold valid health insurance for the duration of stay.

The visa is strictly for academic purposes; holders may not engage in unrelated employment.

The visa cannot be used for full-time employment outside the academic program.

Overstaying the visa or engaging in unauthorised work may result in visa cancellation and impact future applications.

The visa cannot usually be converted to another visa type from within South Africa.

Renewal requires updated invitation letters or confirmation from the South African institution.

Once the sabbatical ends, the visa holder must depart South Africa unless a new visa is obtained.
